Winterise your pool

03/07/2025

When you don't use your swimming pool in winter, there are a few measures you can take to winterise your pool. In that way you keep your pool in good shape, extend the life of your pool equipment and speed-up restarting the system again in summer.

Clean your pool

It is important to give your pool a thorough clean before it is shut down for the winter. If you ensure no debris can enter the pool (use a cover), you will also prevent problems. If not a periodic clean is advisable. If debris, such as falling leaves, is left unattended for a long time, there is a high risk of your pool liner or shell being stained by the degrading debris.

Treat your pool water

To make the water ready for winter, first lower the water level, make sure it is slightly below the skimmer so that pipes do not fill up with water. Then add a wintering product to the water. This slows down algae growth and limescale. It also makes starting up the pool in the spring easier: less cleaning, less chemicals needed, ready to swim again faster. Let the pump run for another 1 to 2 hours to distribute the product properly before switching off the system. Use a good winter float to better protect the water and the pool against frost.

Shut down your pool equipment

When not using your pool in the winter, you can shut down all pool equipment. Please make sure you clean all equipment thoroughly:

  • Drain the water from the pump and filter system (including pipes and hoses) to prevent frost damage

  • Clean the filter and the filter media (sand, glass or cartridge)

  • Clean the pump and hoses

  • Store the pump and any other vulnerable parts in a dry, frost-free place

Use a pool cover

Cover the pool well with a winter cover or tarpaulin that prevents light, dirt and algae formation. Without a cover you will get more leaf fall, rain, dirt and algae growth. Without a cover, monthly cleaning is advised during the Winter. You will also have to treat the water more intensively in the spring.
